PAN

Bluetooth Personal Area Network (PAN) is a small, short-range wireless network based on Bluetooth technology. It aims to simplify connections between devices, enabling data sharing and network interoperability. This is particularly suitable for short-range, low-power applications such as personal device synchronization, device interconnection, and peripheral connections. The technology leverages Bluetooth hardware to establish virtual connections between different devices, allowing existing application software to transfer and exchange data across devices without requiring modifications to the software itself.

The core of Bluetooth PAN technology is the Bluetooth Network Encapsulation Protocol (BNEP). This protocol allows for the encapsulation of standard network packets, thereby supporting the transmission of various network protocols (such as TCP/IP) over Bluetooth.

Within Bluetooth PAN, there are three main roles:

 GN (Group Network): Acts as the central node of the network, responsible for managing and coordinating communication within the entire PAN.

 NAP (Network Access Point): Provides a connection to external networks (such as the Internet), allowing other devices within the PAN to access external resources.

 PANU (PAN User): Ordinary devices connected to the GN or NAP, participating in network communication and data sharing. Two PANU (Personal Area Network User) devices can also establish a Bluetooth connection for file transfer and data synchronization.

Advantages of PAN

Compared to traditional WLAN technology, PAN technology has smaller transmission range, making it more suitable for communication between personal devices. Three general scenarios are discussed in PAN: NAP-PANU, GN-PANU and PANU-PANU. Each of the scenarios has unique network architecture and unique network requirements, but all are various combinations of a PAN.

Network Access Services

NAP-PANU: NAP typically acts as a central node, similar to a router, providing network access services. PANU functions as the end-user, connecting to the NAP to receive network services.

1. Smart Mobility

Wearable devices such as smartwatches connect to the phone via Bluetooth PAN, enabling real-time synchronization of weather data from the phone to the watch. Users can check the weather at any time, helping them avoid unexpected severe weather conditions. When taking a bus or metro, there is no need to take out the phone or a physical card. The smartwatch can obtain the travel pass code from the phone in real time through PAN, allowing users to complete payments simply by bringing the smartwatch close to the card reader, thereby enhancing the travel experience.

2. Smart Homes

P2P Communication

PANU-PANU: Direct interconnection between PANU devices refers to point-to-point communication between two or more user devices without a central network node (such as GN or NAP). In certain application scenarios, it can provide convenient and efficient solutions.

In environments without a network, such as outdoors or during flights, two devices can establish a connection via PAN to transfer files.
